#24: United We Stand....

"We cannot be separated in interest or divided in purpose. We stand together until the end." (Woodrow Wilson)

There's very little a group of determined people cannot accomplish. As long as they remain united, they can do what others would deem the impossible. People working together for a common cause have prevented wars, saved entire cultures, reformed society, and even founded countries. They've tackled social issues, and righted the injustices of previous generations.

Very llittle can stop those who speak with one voice, and act of one accord. Nothing stands in the way of those who are strong and determined.

When CBS canceled JERICHO, thousands rose as one. We became an army, forging ahead, unstoppable until we attained our goal. We stayed the course, and we never wavered. We had no time for fault-finding or argument. We were confident, we were strong, and we succeeded where others failed.

Yet, in the aftermath of our victory, we stand to lose as much as we gained. If we turn on one another, our triumph is for naught.

We have won a battle, but will lose the war if we're not careful. When we no longer speak with one voice, we allow doubt and discord to sow seeds of discontent in our ranks. If we no longer have the same goals, we allow petty argument to pepper the places we gather. If we aren't digilent, we will allow insult and accusation to defeat us. Mistrust will rear its ugly head, coupled with envy, greed and complaint. There will be finger-pointing, and blame cast. All in what should be our hour of triumph.

I ask you, does it truly matter who came up with the idea if it worked? Is one person worth more than another? Are self-aggrandizement and self-promotion more important than overall success? We must ask ourselves these questions, and be honest when we answer. We've already shown that each person was important to our victory. Was this not evidenced repeatedly? Our leaders shared credit with equal alacrity, and the JERICHO cast members showered ALL of us with their praise and gratitude?

No single deed by any one individual tipped the scales in our favor. This was a group effort, and no one person was more important than any other. No one voice was louder than any other, and no one individual won our victory.

JERICHO was worth fighting for six months ago, and it's worth fighting for today. So, let us armor ourselves against failure, and never lose sight of our goal. Ignore discord, and don't let it tarnish our victory. Look to the future, and don't waste time finding fault with the past. March courageously forward together, and don't get bogged down in the mud of doubt.

There are more battles to fight, and more obstacles to overcome if we're to see more JERICHO in the future. We fought the good fight as a community. Through the initial campaign, we upheld and supported one another -- but that's what communities do. I say, if we did it before, we can do it again. All it takes is a little determination and a lot of belief in our fellow Jericho Rangers.

"Please understand there is no depression in this house and we are not interested in the possibilities of defeat. They do not exist." (Victoria, Queen of England)
