#28: One Voice, One Message

"One may know how to gain a victory, and know not how to use it." (Barca)

In May of 2007, JERICHO fans had but one goal -- save the show. We had one rallying cry -- "Nuts!" We spoke with one voice, we acted as a unified body. We came together, setting aside personal issues, ignoring personal agendas, and not allowing personal feelings deter us from what we wanted -- a return of JERICHO. No one questioned the campaign leaders, but followed their suggestions. No one smeared another fan's reputation. No one spread vicious gossip or rumors. Questions and doubt were immediately addressed, all qualms allayed with honesty and truth. The leaders were strongm and were wise in their guidance. We were proud to be Jericho Rangers, and we weren't afraid to face CBS standing side-by-side with our fellow fans.

Three weeks from the day we began, CBS capitulated. We were triumphant, but I fear we had no idea how to use our victory effectively.

Six months later it would appear some of us saw that moment of success as a signal to declare war on our solidarity. Today, JERICHO fandom no longer speaks with one voice, but thousands. Each voice seems to have its own message, and many seem to think their ideas on how to promote JERICHO is the right one. Many seem to have forgotten the show altogether, and promote a single idea, individual or specific site. Tempers flare. Disagreement is rampant. Discord fills every forum. Jealousy and rivalry rear their ugly heads. Many sane, rational voices are lost in the maelstrom. We are no longer a strong, unified group, but a noisy cacophony that sounds worse than a gaggle of squawking geese!

The resulting confusion brings about further separation, and somewhere along the way, our resolve to promote JERICHO has decreased. It would seem our purpose has been lost amidst the individual desires and personal agendas. Such a shame that when we need solidarity most, we have fallen prey to the worst side of human nature.

Some fans do recognize our precarious position, and urge tolerance and patience. When they can be heard above the madding crowd, the rampant discord is tamed, and ruffled feathers are smoothed. Now, more than ever, we need to pay heed to those who exhibit calm rationale. If we don't, then what we won last June was but a small battle, and we will lose the larger war.

JERICHO fans must remember that many voices speaking as one, are far more likely to be heard than hundreds and thousands. It's imperative we regain that one voice, or risk our message being hopelessly garbled and forever lost. In order to successfully lobby for a Season 3 of JERICHO, we must once more become unified, must once more trust in one another. If we don't, the resulting message is, at best, confused and disjointed. At worst, there is a complete breakdown of communication. We stand a better chance of being heard and of achieving our goals if we are united. If we speak from a position of strength, others will be more inclined to take up our rallying cry for Season 3.

Like others, I urge all JERICHO fans to work together. We accomplished a miracle last June, so we've already proven to be a powerful, formidable force. Yet, we are strongest when we act as one. We can do whatever we set our minds to when we stand together. Please, let the confusion, in-fighting and discord end. Let us once more speak with that one voice, and not lose sight of what we've already gained. Let us now work even harder to accomplish our next goal: Season 3!

"So really, it all comes down to this ... what is more effective: 20 people with different messages or 20 people with the same message?" (Rich Becker, Copywrite, Ink)
