Jake:Jericho. A small town in Kansas that witness a series of nuclear attacks that destroyed twenty-three American cities in a single day.The attacks crippled and fractured the U.S. government, and left our town cut off from the world. Even in the worst of times, it's possible to find the best in ourselves, and in others. Robert Hawkins. A covert agent who was supposed to stop the attacks, is now hunted by his former bosses for the secret he holds. A nuclear bomb. Now as we're about to be overwhelmed by a hostile neighboring town. A new government appears. Based out of Cheyenne Wyoming, A government with a new face, flying a new flag.
According to episode "A.K.A." as well, the attacks destroyed twenty-three major American cities. In the episode "A.K.A.", it was also stated that there were 25 explosive devices. Twenty-four cities are identified as being attacked, however it is also known that Columbus, Ohio ("The Day Before"), New York City ("Long Live the Mayor") and St Louis, Missouri ("The Day Before") were targeted but, survived. It is not known if the error lies with the initial number of explosive devices, or incorrect knowledge of the characters on the show.

05. Chicago, Illinois: Shown on Robert Hawkins' early map, possibly received via Morse code. In addition to the U.S. capital of Washington, D.C., seven of the cities destroyed in the 2006 September Attacks were American state capitals. They were as follows, Atlanta, Georgia - Boston, Massachusetts - Denver, Colorado - Hartford, Connecticut - Indianapolis, Indiana - Phoenix, Arizona and St. Paul, Minnesota.
Annapolis, the capital of the U.S. state of Maryland, located 26 miles south of Baltimore and 29 miles east of Washington, D.C., would have been hit tremendously hard with fallout and EMP damage.   
CANADA

At least one Canadian city presumed attacked indirectly.
01. Windsor, Ontario: With the nuclear blast in Detroit, Windsor would also take a direct hit considering they are just across the Detroit River. Thousands on the Ontario side would also be killed or injured. The survivors would have to be evacuated.
Unfortunately winds on the American continent blow upwards into southern Ontario, the largest population region in the country. Given the fallout patterns and EMP, the blasts in Chicago and Detroit could have severely damaged other parts of southern Ontario as well plus cities such as Chatham, Ontario and London, Ontario. Some of the targets were near the border with Canada and, so not only should they have power outages, but also they should be experiencing severe fallout from the attack. Toronto (the provincial capital of Ontario), at the very least, could have been severely affected by the EMP. Canada was affected by the same EMP burst which explains why there was no relief effort from them.

The blast in Seattle may have also hit Vancouver and the British Columbian interior hard as well including Victoria (the British Columbia provincial capital).

MEXICO
At least one Mexican city presumed attacked indirectly.
01.Tijuana, Baja California: The nuclear attack in San Diego would mean that Tijuana would be affected by the blast. In fact,Tijuana would be deemed uninhabitable and you would see millions of people streaming further south into Mexico. High fatalities, massive destruction, fallout, and power outages from the San Deigo attack and EMP on the Baja California side very likely including Mexicali (the capital of the Mexican state of Baja California).
Chavez was quoted in "Reconstruction" as stating that Iran and North Korea had been "wiped off the map".

Eric: Well I guess that explains why this place is empty.
That would have meant that the attacks occured on Monday, September 25, 2006. But in turn, that would have meant that the events of "The Day Before " would have occurred on Sunday, September 24, 2006. Most of what transpired on "The Day Before" did not look like it would have happened on a Sunday.
The attacks were to take place simultaneously, using the nuclear devices hidden in 55-gallon oil drums during the U.S. President's emergency address to Congress.
It appeared to be summer at the time of the attacks.

New York City
New York City was originally reported as attacked in the Chinese broadcast (marked: ??), but was later reported as spared by Gray Anderson. Gray reports the capture of, by NYPD officers, three men in a rental truck who were in possession of a 20-kiloton nuclear device in a steel drum, moments before the device could be detonated. (The New York City arrests are credited to heightened security following the September 11, 2001 attacks. It should also be noted that according to the episode "A.K.A.", Robert Hawkins warned his superiors of the attack and gave them plate numbers of the white vans used in the attacks. This is most likely what prevented the detonation of the New York City bomb). New York City was also not marked on the Black Jack map. A radio report from Episode 17 "One Man's Terrorist", confirms New York City was spared.

Gray: Yeah, well after 9/11 they got pretty good at security. Apparently NYPD caught three guys before they flipped the switch. They had a rented van, a 20 kiloton bomb in a steel drum.

At the end of the episode, the radio the town received from the fake marines in "Semper Fidelis" is fixed and set up in Bailey's Tavern where the townspeople listen to a local radio broadcast being transmitted. The transcription is as follows:

We have also received reports that the bombers gained the trust of local officials which allowed the terrorists access to secure locations; to government buildings, military installations, and to research laboratories. In New York, the terrorists who were apprehended were all carrying nearly perfect fake FBI badges. Their identities have not been released. New capital of the United States. Columbus, Ohio, was written on the card given to Hawkins in episode 12, and was the target city to where he was to deliver his bomb. Since Hawkins never delivered the bomb, Columbus was spared.

Became capital of the Allied States.
John Tomarchio's goal was to create an "Allied States of America" that encompasses everything west of the Mississippi -- the Blue Line -- (a security perimeter set up by United Nations Peacekeepers) and dominate the "weak" former government now centralized in Columbus.

THE ATTACKS
The bombs used in the attacks were brought in by the U.S. government. After the Soviet Union fell, neglected military and the satellite republics started selling their nuclear stockpiles on the black market. So the Central Intelligence Agency started an operation; "Project Red Bell". The objective of the project was to obtain that material by any and all means necessary, but a few years before the events of the series a shipment disappeared on its way to the Department of Energy storage compound in Oak Ridge.
Those warheads were converted into twenty-five 20-kiloton devices, which were disseminated to extremist cells active within the United States. It was a cross-section of "domestic militia, anarchists, and religious fanatics" — terrorist groups that would never ordinarily collaborate, ideologically or politically. The only thing that connected them was the desire to take down the federal government of the United States. The entire plan was orchestrated by individuals with deep resources and an ability to coordinate diverse groups.
John Smith later reveals he is the true mastermind behind the attacks, in the planning stages dating back to 1993, "I think I am, only the last time I blew the whistle, I took out 23 American cities." During a conflict while pretending to be an EMT, he is wounded and flees or else is actually killed.
After someone (believed to be Thomas Valente) tipped off the terrorists about the government's knowledge of the plot, they moved up the timetable for the attacks.

Two rounds of North Korean missile tests were conducted on July 5, 2006. North Korea reportedly fired at least seven separate missiles. These included two short-range Nodong-2 missiles, one Scud missile and up to two long-range Taepodong-2 missiles. The first missile was launched Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at 3:33A.M. KST (Korean Standard Time).

The incident was the accidental killing of a 12 year old girl in Iraq.
Major Edward Beck, an Iraq War veteran, portrayed by Esai Morales, leads the 10th Mountain Division, out of Fort Drum, New York,
sent to occupy Jericho and New Bern in season two. Beck publicly considers his primary mission to be peacekeeping and the restoration of order. His wife was in Santa Fe when the bombs went off, but he remains confident that she is alive despite failed attempts to contact her. After he later learns that the new government covered up the origins of bombs and unjustly destroyed two nations, Iran and North Korea, he sides with the town of Jericho.
Santa Fe, New Mexico, it is indicated that Major Beck's wife was in Santa Fe during the attack and has lost contact with her. Santa Fe survived the attacks.
Witchita, Kansas also survived the attacks but, succumbed to Ravenwood occupation.

Tragically however, Subway's sandwich spokesperson Jared Fogle (the Subway Guy) would have been killed for he was in Seattle (destroyed in attacks) from his home in Indianapolis (destroyed in attacks) to promote the pilot of a 9-week “curriculum” for elementary school kids to help them eat and exercise “smarter” and thereby keep childhood obesity in check at the time of the attacks in September 2006.

THE ARPANET AND NUCLEAR ATTACKS
A common semi-myth about the ARPANET states that it was designed to be resistant to nuclear attack. The Internet Society writes about the merger of technical ideas that produced the ARPANET in A Brief History of the Internet, and states in a note:
It was from the RAND study (The RAND Corporation [Research and Development] is a nonprofit global policy think tank first formed to offer research and analysis to the United States armed forces) that the false rumor started claiming that the ARPANET was somehow related to building a network resistant to nuclear war. This was never true of the ARPANET, only the unrelated RAND study on secure voice considered nuclear war. However, the later work on Internetting did emphasize robustness and survivability, including the capability to withstand losses of large portions of the underlying networks.
The ARPANET was designed to survive network losses, but the main reason was actually that the switching nodes and network links were not highly reliable, even without any nuclear attacks. Charles Herzfeld, ARPA director from 1965 to 1967, speaks about limited computer resources helping to spur ARPANET's creation:
"The ARPANET was not started to create a Command and Control System that would survive a nuclear attack, as many now claim. To build such a system was clearly a major military need, but it was not ARPA's mission to do this; in fact, we would have been severely criticized had we tried. Rather, the ARPANET came out of our frustration that there were only a limited number of large, powerful research computers in the country, and that many research investigators who should have access to them were geographically separated from them".

COULD THE INTERNET SURVIVE A NUCLEAR ATTACK?
In addition many myths surround the Internet, one of which holds that the system could keep delivering e-mail even if a large chunk of it was destroyed by a nuclear bomb.
While that's not entirely true, the underlying technology of the system was in part designed with just that scenario in mind.
Vinton G. Cerf, one of the Internet creators, stated that, if properly constructed, the system could remain functional after a nuclear strike.
Simulations were done using special radios equipped with Internet technologies. What happened? At first, the network splintered, but the remaining sections of the network sought out each other and hooked up, continuing to transmit information across the surviving parts of the system.
Cerf, however, hastened to add that there was no truth to the belief that the Internet was impervious to nuclear attack. If there is no path the routers can use to get data to locations on a given path, Internet access will disappear for anyone connected to that path.
